Frequently Asked Questions About Cannabis Transdermals

What are cannabis transdermals?

The transdermal delivery of cannabis works by allowing cannabinoids to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. Transdermal products include gels and patches, though other formats may be available.

What is MÜV EnCaps encapsulated technology and how is it used in transdermals?

EnCaps encapsulated technology takes the beneficial cannabinoids and encases them in a micelle shell, rendering THC and CBD water-soluble instead of their inherent fat-soluble. This micelle cell allows the cannabinoids to bypass the fatty upper layers of the skin to penetrate and release in the watery bloodstream for systemic (full-body) effects.

How are cannabis transdermals different than topicals?

Transdermal marijuana products are able to penetrate the bloodstream for full-body effects. Traditional marijuana topicals will dissipate in the upper layers of the skin for localized pain relief.

What are different types of marijuana transdermal products?

The two most prominent transdermal items include patches and gels, both of which can be found at MÜV in Florida.

Is there such thing as a marijuana patch?

Yes! Marijuana patches are typically reservoir patches, meaning the medication is housed in a reservoir for slow release, or matrix patches, where the cannabinoids are infused into the adhesive.

MÜV Transdermal Patches are reservoir patches, which allows for the slow release of 20mg of cannabinoids into the bloodstream over the course of 3 days and available in THC, CBD, and 1:1 THC/CBD formulations.

What are transdermal patches used for?

Transdermal patches are used to administer a consistent discreet microdose over the course of a few days - at MÜV, doses are dispersed over 3 days, or a 72-hour period. Patches are ideal to ensure a constant dosing of cannabis, and, due to the low dose, are great products to stack with. For example, if you are wearing a patch and have a back spasm, applying a transdermal gel or traditional topical to the site of breakthrough pain may help to ease more thoroughly.

Can transdermal patches make you high?

Transdermal patches typically dose at low doses - for example, the MÜV Transdermal Patch microdoses a consistent 0.24mg over the course of 72 hours. While 0.24mg is not a dose that will get most patients high, those with lower tolerances may experience some cerebral effects.

What is the best CBD patch?

The best CBD patch is the MÜV CBD Patch. It contains 20mg of CBD, dosed at 0.24mg over a 72-hour period.

How quickly do transdermal patches work?

MÜV Transdermal Patches take effect approximately 10-15 minutes after application. They can be worn the full 72 hours (or until the liquid inside the patch is gone), or removed and placed on its original plastic casing.

A unique feature of the MÜV marijuana patch is that it’s cannabis with an “off” button - after removing the patch, effects subside in 45 minutes, making it an ideal option for newcomers to the alternative medicine.

What are the side effects of transdermal patch?

Cannabis transdermal patches have the same potential side effects as other cannabis products:

  • sleepiness or fatigue
  • diarrhea
  • appetite changes
  • weight loss or weight gain

Because transdermal patches are topically applied and are worn for extensive periods, making skin irritation (particularly for those with sensitive skin) possible. We recommend moving the application site of trandermal patches to avoid this.

What is the best pain relief patch?

The “best” patch is fairly dependent on the ailment and symptom that is being eased. MÜV produces marijuana patch in THC, CBD and 1:1 THC/CBD options to best fit the needs of Florida’s patients.

It is worth noting that 1:1 THC/CBD ratios are ideal due to the cannabinoids’ functions. THC targets the sensation of pain, while CBD targets inflammation, which is often the underlying cause of pain.

Can I shower with a transdermal patch?

Yes, MÜV Transdermal Patches are waterproof. If you prefer not to wear it in the shower, ocean, or pool, it can be removed and placed on a piece of plastic for easy reapplication.

Can I cut a CBD patch in half?

No. Because MÜV Patches are reservoir patches, cutting one in half would release the active ingredient prematurely and no longer be usable.

What's a 1:1 transdermal patch?

1:1 indicates the cannabinoid ratio and typically refers to the THC:CBD content. MÜV produces a 1:1 THC/CBD cannabis patch that provides 10mg THC and 10mg CBD over the course of 72 hours. You can learn more about 1:1 ratios in the MÜV Blog here.

Do cannabis transdermals help with pain?

Depending on the ailment, cannabis transdermals can be a great option to help combat pain, particularly due to the systemic effects they provide. Patches in particular are great options as, at a low dose, they are optimal for stacking with other cannabis options.
