THC Crumble: What Is It, Where Does It Come From, How Is It Made, and How Do You Smoke It

By Danyal Swan December 19, 2023

If you're a cannabis patient or cannabis user, you’ve likely come across one of the many forms of cannabis concentrates. One popular concentrate, for a multitude of reasons, is THC crumble. We’re breaking down everything you need to know about THC crumble: where it comes from, how it’s made, and how to smoke it. Grab your dab tools and let’s dive in!

What Is Crumble Wax?

Crumble wax, also known as THC crumble, is a type of cannabis concentrate that has a unique texture and consistency. It is named "crumble" because of its brittle and crumbly texture, similar to the consistency of honeycomb or feta cheese (though less moist!). This concentrate is known for its potency, high THC levels, and fragrance, making it a favorite among cannabis enthusiasts.

Where Does THC Crumble Come From?

THC crumble is derived from the cannabis plant, just like other cannabis concentrates. It is made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis strains. The extraction process involves isolating the compounds from the plant material to create a highly concentrated product.

How Is Crumble Wax Made?

How Is Crumble Wax Made?

The production of THC crumble involves a process called extraction, where the active compounds are separated from the plant material. Here are the key steps involved in making THC crumble:

  1. Extraction: The process begins by extracting the cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant using a solvent, often ethanol, butane, hydrocarbon, or CO2. This extraction process results in a concentrated oil known as crude oil or crude extract.
  2. Purging: The crude oil is then purged of residual solvents through a process of applying heat and vacuum. This step helps remove any remaining impurities, solidifying it into shatter.
  3. Melting and Whipping: After purging, the solidified shatter is melted back down to an oil. This oil is whipped vigorously to remove any remaining solvents and create air pockets. This whipping process gives THC crumble its characteristic crumbly and honeycomb-like texture.
  4. Drying and Curing: The whipped oil is then allowed to dry and cure in a vacuum oven. This process further solidifies the concentrate and enhances its texture.

THC crumble typically has a crumbly texture; depending on the strain’s terpene profile, it can range from dry to slightly sticky. It ranges in color from light golden to amber, depending on the specific strain. The texture and appearance of crumble wax make it easy to handle and portion for consumption.

How Do You Smoke THC Crumble?

Smoking THC crumble – more commonly referred to as dabbing – is a popular method of consumption due to its potency and flavorful experience. Here's how you can smoke THC crumble:

Tools Needed for Smoking THC Crumble

  • Dab Rig: A specialized water pipe designed for flash-vaporizing concentrates.
  • Dab Tool: A small metal tool used to handle and apply the crumble.
  • Blow Torch: Used to heat the nail of the dab rig.

  1. Heat the nail: Use a blow torch to heat the nail of your dab rig.
  2. Apply the crumble: Use a dab tool to scoop a small amount of THC crumble and place it on the heated nail. The heat instantly vaporizes the crumble, producing a potent vapor.
  3. Inhale and enjoy: Place your mouth on the mouthpiece of the dab rig and inhale slowly while simultaneously moving the dab tool around the heated nail to ensure all the crumble is vaporized. Take small, controlled inhalations to savor the flavor and effects.

Smoking THC Crumble with a Dab Pen or E-rig

If a dab rig sounds too intense for your needs, dab pens and e-rigs are a more precise way of heating concentrates. A few popular options include:

  • Nectar collector devices. These dab pens typically have no buttons; you simply graze the coil on the THC crumble while gently inhaling. You can dab directly from the container, or from a dab tool for more precise dosing.
  • Dab pens. These devices works like a vaporizer; an empty chamber attaches to a battery. Your dab dose should be loaded into the chamber to be activated to inhale. Often, dab pens have buttons to cycle between low, medium, and high heat.
  • E-rigs. Crafted to provide the same robust, flavor dab as a complete dab rig, e-rigs are preferred by many due to temperature control. E-rigs offer either precise temperatures or low, medium, and high settings, depending on type, with the added bonus of water filtration.

Smoking THC Crumble with Flower

The best way to smoke THC crumble with flower is to layer it with flower. If you pack a bowl, do a layer of flower, a small layer of crumble, then top with more flower.

You can use a method called “twaxing” where the THC crumble is incorporated directly onto a joint; it's easiest to make the crumble stick with some distillate.

Best Temperature to Smoke Crumble Wax

The ideal temperature for smoking THC crumble is between 315° to 450° F  (157° to 232° C). The best way to check this when using a blow torch is to hold your hand approximately 6 inches away from your banger; you should be able to hold it there comfortably.

Temperature guns that provide precise readings are also available to inform patients and users on exact readings for the perfect temperature.

How Potent Is THC Crumble?

THC crumble is known for its high potency due to its concentrated form; THC levels in crumble wax can range from 60% to 90%. It is essential to start with a small amount and gradually increase dosing based on your tolerance and experience.
