Coastal East Central Florida is the surfing and space hub of the state. The Atlantic Ocean, framed by white sand beaches, provides a constant churn of the best waves for those that seek them, and highly showcased each year for the Easter Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach. The ocean, too, provides a safe haven for shuttle and rocket launches that take place at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, giving this portion of the state the loving name of Space Coast. And, amidst the ocean and spaceships, lies an art-lovers haven: Melbourne, which just so happens to be home to two beloved art festivals.
The annual Melbourne Art Festival celebrated its 36th year of operation in 2021. Hosted each year on the last full weekend of April in Wickham Park, the festival features art workshops, art exhibits, and vendors galore to satiate all tastes. And, the best part? The event is, and always has been, free to the public. The Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival, too, is held each year, and in 2021 falls Dec. 2-4. Filmmakers are encouraged to submit their work to be showcased at the three-day festival, which includes food and nonstop fun. A particular fun challenge is posited to screenwriters and directors that choose to participate – Tie Up Loose Ends. Screenplays are submitted and a winner selected, with the winner’s script becoming a challenge itself. Directors take the script and produce it to their vision, but write their own ending. For the days between these local festivals, look no further than King Center for the Performing Arts, a favorite spot to take in live theater. But what is a show without dinner?
Melbourne is a sea of local eateries, with a wide range of fares. Backwater Florida is a local favorite due to its all-day menu. That’s right – breakfast OR dinner, all day. And, it gets better – the restaurant features DIY pancakes. You purchase the batter and are seated at a griddle table to create to your own desire, with a list of ingredients for purchase! Hemingway’s Tavern, too, provides eclectic fare. All of Hemingway’s favorites are on the menu – think Cuban sandwiches, empanadas, and limitless libations – none of which disappoint. Food and arts are all good and fun, but Melbourne cannot be mentioned without the Indian River Lagoon State Park.
The lagoon, situated between Melbourne and the barrier island Melbourne Beach resides on, is “the most ecologically diverse estuary in North America,” according to Florida State Parks. The area showcases two prominent Florida features: mangrove wetlands and salt marshes. Both of these play a large part in helping to filter the runoff water of the river, helping to maintain a water quality so pure it has been designated an “Outstanding Florida Water and an Estuary of National Significance.” It is for all of these reasons and more that we are excited to put roots down in Melbourne.
